In this lesson, we will discuss the closest black hole yet discovered near Earth. The black hole was initially observed by the Gaia observatory in orbit, then by the Gemini telescope in Hawaii. it is about 1,600 light years away and is a binary companion with an average sized star. Astronomers believe it is a dormant black hole because we don't see any visible x-ray plume from the black hole. Active black holes compress hot gases as they absorb the companion star, generating a shock wave of xrays and matter along the spin axis of the black hole.
