Lesson on Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs): Physiology, Triggers (caffeine, nicotine, alcohol), Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment. Premature ventricular contractions (also known as PVCs) are a very common arrhythmia that can be triggered via a variety of underlying cardiac conditions, non-cardiac conditions, and medications and substances, including caffeine and alcohol. PVCs are caused by autonomous firing from a focus in a ventricle outside of the normal depolarization pathway in the heart. This leads to characteristic ECG findings, which we discuss in this lesson. We also discuss when we use medications to treat, and when we need to workup PVCs for an underlying structural heart condition.
