George Stewart, former Forestry Commissioner, was born in 1919 in the same year as the founding of the Forestry Commission of Great Britain. After serving with the Royal Artillery and 8th Army in North Africa and Italy in World War II, George chose a career in forestry and joined the FC.
A remarkably active man all of his life, he learned to ski in Italy during World War II and remains an active skier to this day. On retirement from the FC in 1979 he turned to tennis, eventually becoming a member of the British over-80s tennis team and winning 2 world championships in his age class!
George also served as the Chair of the Scottish Wildlife Trust as well as being on the Council of the National Trust for Scotland.
In this interview in 2019, on the centenary of the founding of the FC, George reminisces on his 100 years and his time working in forestry with the Forestry Commission, mainly, but not exclusively in Scotland. This is his story.
