“The collection was very much based around being at one and living in harmony with our fellow creatures. So living as humans and animals together on planet Earth. And it started there. It always starts there at Stella McCartney. But the concept for this collection was really about equestrian, about horses, about the relationship with trust between human and animal. How horses are so trusting and so with Jean-Francois I wanted to show that you can have a relationship."

“When I get to be on my horse, it truly refills my soul. And so… I’ve been riding since I was the age of nothing - mostly bareback in the countryside, falling off, getting back on. And my mother’s photography is on some of those dresses : her stallion Lucky Spot, and my sister’s photography of her horses, so the relationship between mother and sister and family as well.”

“When you see leather in a luxury house, there’s no way they’re skinning the cow gracefully before they’re making meat. It’s just not realistic. So I think I just really wanted to point it out. You know, for me, coming to Stella, if you see a live animal and you see the entire collection with no, you know, using technologies of grape leathers of waste from the wine industry, apple leather, mushroom, mycelium leather and you know, amazing bio-technologies that we're making bags out of - we’re trying to show you don’t need to do that.”

STORYLINE:
Earthy scents pricked guests’ noses as they entered the venue for Stella McCartney: A manege. Shivers from the cold were quickly succeeded by gasps, when seven horses suddenly galloped in from a side door followed by an exuberant handler.
The show that incorporated equestrian themes was a visual and sensory statement from McCartney, a prominent animal rights campaigner.
McCartney used the sport’s pomp and regalia to inspire a collection that harked to her tailoring background.
A double-breasted jacket had sharp shoulders nipped above the waist with a diagonal dynamic, mixing masculine and feminine. Takes on regalia and the military included a men’s white lilac tailored show jumping jacket.
The sense of “softness and a hardness, of male versus female,” a touchstone of the LVMH-owned fashion house, was captured also by the horses themselves, McCartney said.
