➤ Nasi Padang - Padang Rice & Assorted Dishes $? (FREE)
Nasi kuning is the yellow rice that this dish revolves around. Right in the center of the plate is a mound of fragrant rice and it is surrounded by a few side dishes. The assorted side dishes you can pick out but I asked to get what is popular. By itself the rice is good, but with the mixed veggies and meats – just wow. It reminds me of Korean food where rice is the center stage and all else is there to support, balance, or compliment the rice. You can have different flavor deliveries depending on what kind of combination you make with each bite. There was sambal ijo and terasi that was available for even further fun with mixing flavors – SO ENAK BANGET (VERY DELICIOUS)!
➤ Beef Rendang - Braised Caramelized Beef
What can I say? I’m a beef person so this was delicious! The beef was super tender and deep with flavors. On the first bite, you can tell immediately that there was some spiciness to it. Mutia the owner let me know that with Aceh-style cooking, they use a lot of spices and different spices from other provinces in Indonesia. I could taste the difference which made me happy because now I am developing an Indonesian palate! Pretty cool stuff. Love the flavors of the beef rendang here and with rice and sambal terasi – just wow!
➤ Sayur Singkong - Coconut Milk Collard Greens
Singkong is one of those foods that you just need with rice and meat. I mean, you don’t need it but it certainly helps to balance out the richness of the meat but cutting the savoriness with its almost tangy/faint bitterness to it. It reminds me of how kimchi accomplishes the same thing with rice and meat. I am thinking singkong works with any meat – need to test this out. Get this when you get nasi padang and beef rendang!
➤ Telur Balado - Spicy Deep Fried Eggs
I’m a total egg fan. Cook it any way and I’ll enjoy it. With sambal it’s so delicious. With balado sauce – even better. Deep-fried hard-boiled eggs to make the outer layer kind of course and develop like a rough skin – so interestingly delicious! Whoever thought of this is a genius! Egg works well with rice and even with meats. I like to take a small bite and eat it with rice. It is pretty good but nothing eggtraordinary. LOL!
➤ Gulai Ayam - Curry Chicken
I’m so glad I got this curry chicken – hands down my favorite part of this meal! There was something so home feeling about this curry chicken. It was tender, the skin was soft, and the curry was dripping through the meat as I took each bite. The flavors of the curry really penetrated deep into the meat so you got the turmeric, garlic, and spicy flavors with each bite. Honestly never had a curry chicken this good. I will say that this is the best gulai ayam ever (until I find a replacement lol). Mix the curry chicken with some rice? THE END! GET THIS NOW!
Seulanga Cafe is such a great hole-in-the-wall restaurant in South Philly. It is totally unassuming especially considering that there are no signs on the outside. If you go there, just look for the open door at the corner where there are people walking in and out and you’ll know it’s the right spot. Mutia is a great person, such a positive and hard-working chef/owner. You can taste the love in her food. She serves the immediate area but I see so many walks of life coming in - not just Indonesian Muslims (even though the food is Halal). Check her and her food out when you are in the area – tell her I sent you!
