Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Thursday apologized for COVID-19 restrictions he announced last Friday which led to a wave of criticism, some of which were rescinded by his government just days after the announcement was made.
The premier faced heavy criticism after revealing new measures an extension of the province-wide stay-at-home order last week that included heavy police powers and the closure of outdoor amenities while falling short on calls for paid sick leave for essential workers.
Speaking from isolation at his home, Ford said they needed to "limit mobility," but that they moved "too quickly" and that they corrected their mistake on the weekend. He added that he never directed police to pull people over and that was to be done under their own discretion.
On Tuesday Ford’s office said the premier was isolating after a staff member’s COVID-19 test came back positive. Ford’s test results came back negative according to his government.
Ford also announced paid sick leave for people forced into quarantine, saying people should not have to worry about their jobs or income just because they get sick. He says the province is now working on a solution because the federal government hasn't expanded its own policy.
He added that he's "not gonna stop" after the wave of criticism from last weekend. While many critics called for his resignation, Ford was defiant Thursday saying he will continue to work to get the province through the pandemic adding he's not one "to walk away from anything."
