Like any explosive volcano, those that rise from the seafloor to form islands have the potential for giant landslides that can cause tsunamis. This has happened several times over geologic time at the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands and could happen again in the future, say researchers in a new paper in the AGU journal JGR Solid Earth. To understand the danger posed by such an event, researchers have created to model of the last event that happened about 180,000 years ago. The results are important for developing emergency plans in the Canary Islands and other similar locales.
