Hilary Clinton moved to tears by former US president's eulogy at McGuinness funeral
Hilary Clinton said her husband's speech at Martin McGuinness' funeral moved her to tears
Hilary Clinton has said she was moved to tears by the speech made by her husband, former US president Bill Clinton, at Martin McGuinness's funeral.
Mrs Clinton posted a video of the eulogy on her Twitter page with the comment: "Bill’s speech brought tears to my eyes. Wanted to share it. Watch if you want to be inspired today."
The Sinn Fein leader passed away at the age of 66 after suffering from a rare heart condition. Thousands lined the streets of Londonderry for his funeral on Thursday.
Mr Clinton himself was central to the Good Friday Agreement and was among the many prominent figures in attendance at the funeral service.
Addressing mourners in St Columba's Church, he urged Northern Ireland leaders to pick up where Mr McGuinness left off.
"He persevered and he prevailed. He risked the wrath of his comrades and the rejection of his adversaries," he said.
"He made honourable compromises and was strong enough to keep them and came to be trusted because his word was good.
"And he never stopped being who he was. A good husband, a good father, a follower of the faith of his father and mother and a passionate believer in a free, secure, self-governing Ireland.
"The only thing that happened was that he explanded the definition of 'us' and shrunk the definition of 'them'."
Mr Clinton added: "Our friend earned this vast crowd today. Even more, he earned the right to ask us to honour his legacy by our living. To finish the work that is there to be done."
After his passionate eulogy Mr Clinton spoke briefly with the McGuinness family and touched the coffin as he walked by.
