Welcome to The Boot Room. This week we discuss formations. Choose a team which plays in a formation that suits your play style or set up your formation to play in the formation of your choice.

Using a team's default formation could mean playing with a formation you're not comfortable with.

Darren's preferred formation is 4-4-2 diamond wide, also known as 4-1-2-1-2 in FIFA Ultimate Team. It's a very versatile formation where you have 5 players to defend and five players to attack with wide players who can join the attack or come back to help defend, as well as a great strike partnership.

There are five versions of 4-3-3 in seasons mode. 4-3-3 false 9, 4-3-3 attack, 4-3-3 defend, 4-3-3 holding and 4-3-3 standard. 4-3-3 is good if you like crossing the ball to a striker or cutting in and attempting a shot.

4-5-1 is a defensive formation that's useful for attempting to keep a clean sheet and attacking on the break. Combine with the counter attack tactic when you win the ball for added effect.

You can create your own custom formations and save them for use via the Customise FIFA menu on the main screen.
