A Snorricam (or chest cam, bodymount camera, bodycam or body mount) is a camera device used in filmmaking that is rigged to the body of the actor, facing the actor directly, so when they walk, they do not appear to move, but everything else around them does. The first time we ever saw the “Snorricam look” was in the movie “Pi” by Darren Aronofsky. We wanted to replicate this look for one of the shots in our short zombie film, Samurai Dead 2. Using some wood boards, velcro, and cheap camera accessories from Amazon, we built our own Snorricam. It was surprisingly easy to build.
Instead of using a DSLR, we filmed the SnorriCam scenes using a GoPro camera. A GoPro is light and durable. This made it easier to build the Snorricam rig since it didn’t need to support as much weight. It also made it much less riskier to film with since the GoPro would be much more likely to survive a crash to the ground than a DSLR. The GoPro is also ideal because it has an extremely wide angle lens and captures a greater area around your actor’s face and body. That way, you don’t have to be as precise when staging your shot and pointing the camera at your actor.
Please note: The scene where the actor spits out the liquid and falls to the ground in slow motion was NOT shot with a Snorricam. It was shot with the GoPro from overhead with a Manfrotto monopod. All the other shots in the movie scene were filmed with our DIY SnorriCam.
