“Is marine biology important to society?”
I see this question a lot. There are quite a few different ways that I can answer this question, but today I am going to talk about how marine life and the ocean contribute to our basic human needs. Even if you live far away from the ocean, and even for people who have never even seen the ocean – the ocean still provides our basic human needs.
We all learned in school that trees, bushes, grasses create oxygen for us to breathe. but did you know that about 50 to 80 % of all the oxygen on earth is produced by marine life, primarily plankton, in the ocean?
Marine life in the ocean provides many sources of food for society – different cultures across the globe vary in their dependence upon direct ocean food sources such as fish. But on average, 15% of protein sources that humans consume come directly from marine life, both animals and plants.
Did you know that the ocean influences the climate and wind patterns and affects where and when different areas receive rainfall?
Numerous marine industries contribute to local economies throughout the world. Some of the largest industries that depend on marine life include marine fisheries, and ocean and coastal tourism.
