Online blackmail happens in so many ways, and sometimes the most unsuspecting. A college professor wrote an article, and a blackmailer left a comment with a question. The two engaged in casual messaging for a few months. Eventually, the situation turned into an online relationship. The problem with so-called online connections is it is all texting, no calls, or live videos. The world today tends to accept no sight or sound of another as the norm. Like most online interactions, sex typically rises to the surface—a few photos and then a video.

No one ever imagines another is out to do them harm. However, everyone you meet digitally is potentially threatening your way of life. The rule of thumb to identify a person is to have a live video (pants on) for ten minutes with conversation. If they tell you their audio is broken or some excuse as to why they cannot video, end all communications and block.
It is easy to fall victim to sextortion and extremely difficult to get out. Everyone must go into online chatting and dating being defensive. Anything less makes you vulnerable. When you send compromising photos or videos, there is no return.
Frank M. Ahearn stops sextortion and blackmail.
