This is an Imprimatura Bistre - the “first layer” of paint. Specifically, this one’s a split imprimatura. I’m using oil paint (Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Transparent Earth Red, and Burnt Umber) thinned with odorless mineral spirits. For the Bistre, I’ve rubbed out highlights with a simple paper towel.
