The book 'Hungarian Fiddle Tunes" was written by Chris Haigh, and published by Schott in 2012.
It contains 143 traditional tunes. The chapters are arranged historically , starting with the oldest ("Old " and "New Style" pentatonic tunes, as identified by Bartok), followed by Verbunkos, csardas, and Nota.
Tunes are grouped into playable "sets" of two or three. Each tune has an accompanying mp3, recorded either with solo fiddle, lead fiddle and accompanying fiddle, plus some with accordion and double bass.
There is a detailed introduction outlining the history of Hungarian traditional music from the earliest tunes, through the role of music in the days of the Hapsburg Empire, the influence of urban gypsy orchestras, verbunkos, csardas and nota. The research of Bartok and Kodaly is discussed, music during communist times, and finally the Tanchaz movement which still thrives today.
