Turkey calls for an end to tension
One of Turkey’s deputy prime ministers has called on Iran and Saudi Arabia to end diplomatic tension. Numan Kurtulmus says continuing hostilities will harm both countries and the region. Protesters set parts of Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran on fire after Riyadh executed 47 people, including a prominent Shia cleric. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Sudan, Kuwait and the UAE have all cut or downgraded their ties with Iran because of the attack.
Refugee boat capsizes
Turkey’s coastguard has found the bodies of at least 21 refugees who drowned as they tried to cross Aegean to reach the Greek island of Lesbos. The coastguard says it’s still searching for survivors. Turkey is one of the main transit points for people crossing from Syria and Iraq into Europe. There are currently 2.2 million Syrian refugees in Turkey.
Candidates call for vote counting to stop
Nearly two-thirds of the candidates who ran in the elections last month have asked for authorities to stop counting votes. They suspect there was electoral fraud. With about 40 percent of the votes counted, two former prime ministers are in the lead. There’s been ongoing sectarian violence in the majority Christian republic, since Muslim rebels seized power in early 2013. People hope the polls will restore democracy to the country.
Social media mocks Oregon militia
Social media users have begun to mock the armed gunmen, who’ve occupied a federal wildlife reserve in the US state of Oregon. They’re using the Twitter hashtags Y’allqaeda, Vanilla ISIS, Talibundy and Yeehawd. The anti-government protest began in support of two ranchers who are facing extra jail time for arson. The militia wants the land turned over to the local government - and accuse the federal government of infringing on their rights.
