Maiden's Tower, or Kız Kulesi in Turkish, is a historic tower located in the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Üsküdar, Istanbul, Turkey. The tower has a long and rich history, dating back to the 5th century BC.
The tower was originally built by the Athenian general Alcibiades as a watchtower and fort. It was later used by the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. In the 12th century, the tower was connected to a chain that stretched across the Bosporus Strait, controlling the flow of ships through the strait.
The tower is also the subject of a popular legend. According to the legend, a king had a daughter who was prophesied to die by a snakebite on her 18th birthday. To protect her, the king locked her in the tower. On her 18th birthday, a snake slithered into the tower and bit the princess, who died.
Today, Maiden's Tower is a popular tourist destination. It is open to the public and offers stunning views of Istanbul.
