One of the best games of 1987, Rockman (known as Mega Man in the west for.....no good reason) was a very forward thinking game for its time, Unlike virtually every action-platformer that proceeded it, Rockman gave players an unheard of degree of freedom. The first six stages of the game could be completed in any order. Once a boss was defeated Rockman acquired their power. Permanently. The game was offered variable difficulty depending on the weapon and stage order. There was just so much to this game. to top it off, Rockman was designed around the strengths of the Famicom, which offered a wider array of blue hues in its color pallet than most other colors - the reason the blue bomber is blue.
Rockman 1 was also one of the first notable Famicom games to employ the double sprite trick to make characters more detailed and cartoon-like. Without going into too much technical detail, NES sprites could only consist of a maximum of three colors plus a transparency layer.
Rockman overcame this limitation by making the majority of the characters two sprites layers over each other. Rockman himself is two sprites - His body and his head. This is how Megaman is black, cyan, blue, white (his eyes) and pale yellow (his face).
Oh, and the music for Rockman is incredible as well. Everyone always sings the praises of the sequel, but this original game is pretty damn incredible in its own right.
