A featured speaker at Portland VegFest 2016, Jonathan Balcombe makes a persuasive case for why all animals, including human, have much more in common than traditionally assumed. Jonathan brings an extensive background as a scientist, including a PhD in animal ethology and many published papers in animal behavior.
He is most known as a successful author on animal sentience, including these books: What a Fish Knows: The Inner Lives of Our Underwater Cousins (2016), The Exultant Ark: A Pictorial Tour of Animal Pleasure (2011), Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals (2010), Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good (2006), and The Use of Animals in Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, and Recommendations (2000).
During his career, he has been Department Chair for Animal Studies with the Humane Society University, Senior Research Scientist with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and is currently Director of Animal Sentience with the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy in Washington, DC.
