(14 Jan 2017) Iraqi forces continued to battle Islamic State militants for control of the Mosul university complex, an area of psychological significance in the operation to liberate Iraq's second city from the extremists.
Senior commanders said Iraqi forces had secured just under a quarter of the campus amid stiff resistance, having entered the university on Friday morning.
Unlike in the surrounding areas, Iraqi officers said they believed the university grounds were largely empty of civilians and so they've been able to use air power more liberally.
Elsewhere in the city, government forces said they had taken control of the eastern edges of three of Mosul's five bridges.
Iraqi forces had entered the city from the east, making their way towards the west, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.
The River Tigris divides the city into two halves approximately in the middle.
