Vinayaks Atre-scripted film initiated his best known series of political satires (Brandichi Batli/Brandy Ki Botal, 1939; Sarkari Pahune, 1942). The title means The Celibate and addresses the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu organisation emphasising celibacy and discipline, which became the power base of the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). An ordinary young man Audumbar (Vinayak inspired by a militant lecture on bachelorhood and nationalism by the Deshbhakta Jatashankar (Javedkar), renounces sexual desire, throwns away his collection of movie star posters, starts excersing his muscle in the tradition of Hanumans disciples and joins the Self-Help Institute of the Acharya Chandiram (Malvankar). All his discipline comes to nought in the face of Kishori (Meenakshi). The film was the first to feature actors most associated with Vinayaks brand of satair V.G. Jog and Damuanna Malvankar (the duo in the film-makers legendary Chimanaro series). Malvankars tremendously popular role in the film was his first big success. Meenakshi also makes her first appearance in a Vinayak film and here she sings, dressed in a bathing costume in a pool, the sensational seduction number Yamuna jali khelu khela. *. Audumbar is a somewhat simple-minded young man with all the ordinary expectations from life. An encounter with Lord Hanuman, however, has a drastic effect on him. Attending a birthday celebration of this celebate god, Audumbar is vastly impressed by a lecture given by a local celebrity on bachelorhood. The first thing he does when he returns home is to throw away all the photographs of his favourite actresses. He takes a vow of celibacy and starts exercising to build up his muscles in the time-honoured tradition of all devotees of the monkey god. . Audumbars efforts to ward off any revival of interest in the fair sex are threatened when he hears a plaintive love song sung by his neighbour who is a bachelor too, but has no desire to remain in that state. Disgusted with his surroundings where he has to fight to keep his celibacy intact, Audumbar leaves home. He moves into Acharya Chandirams ashram, where he devotes himself to spinning and wielding the broom. . The new life satisfies the young man only for a while-until he meets Kishori, the young and charming daughter of a forest officer who visits the ashram. The god of celibacy has to beat a hasty retreat,] leaving Audumbar at the mercy of the god of love. Soon, unable to concentrate on spining .
