Outside of heavy metal division or a manufacturers bounty (Advanced Armament Corp.) calibers other than 223/5.56 have never been given serious thought in any of the mainstay equipment divisions. However, as major events continue to push the long range component of 3gun competition to extending past 500 yards on more than 30 to 40% of an event stages is it really crazy to consider caliber like 6mm Arc?
Usually a suggestion like this would be instantaneously dismissed on the grounds of ammunition cost alone, but in the grand scheme of things compared to match grade ammunition that is already being used and in the interest of performing one’s best is it really that outlandish I did some math and here’s what I found.
Obviously, we would be buying a specialized rifle and specialized magazines that we wouldn’t already own, so yes, there would be some initial investment, but the conversation itself in concept usually dies right at the price of ammunition so if the price of ammunition isn’t the dealbreaker then is this not truly a viable solution for major match three gun competition?
I have 6 mm as my primary rifle at a few matches this season and here are my initial thoughts on the practice as a concept in of itself.
