Hiking in Egypt, Sinai, North Africa. In late December together with my two oldest sons Joels and Rubens, I climbed Jabal Mousa or the Mountain of Moses in Egypt — best known as Mount Sinai.
Since this hike can only be done with a guide, we booked the tour directly from our hotel in Sharm El-Sheikh, the Jaz Mirabel Resort. They provided us with breakfast boxes. The guide picked us up at 20:30 from the hotel, we went in a police convoy to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the St Katherine Protectorate where we arrived at 1:30.
After being handed over to a bedouin guide, we began our trek at 2:00 in the morning. After 2,5 hours we reached the top where we had to sleep for almost 2 hours until we could enjoy the sunrise at 6:30. At 8:40 we were back down at the Saint Catherine Monastery to have a look at the Well of Moses and the Burning bush.
At 10:00 we launched our drive back through the fascinating wilderness of Sinai, this time — in day light. At 13:30 we arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh. It was a very interesting experience, a hike of its own character. I definitely recommend it, but prepare for a challenging night.
