Here’s the Halfords guide to choosing the right BMX bike for you.

BMX bikes are designed for both racing and freestyle riding, it would be fair to say they're a little bit sturdier than your average bike. Let’s take a look at BMX bikes and we’ll go through what you need to know about them.

Take these models for example, which offer you great looks and specification with a gyro system so you can rotate the handle bars 360 degrees and V brakes.

However, as you jump to the next model and you’re looking to progress, you'll find that the rear U-brake is far better suited for tricks than the V brake. And the higher spec can make a big difference when it comes to performance.

All these bikes have 14 inch frames with 20-inch tyres and the option of removable trick pegs, but this upgraded model has a super lightweight frame that gives you additional strength and support.

When you're at the park, the last thing you need is tangled brake cables wrapping themselves around your handlebars - that's where a gyro system comes in handy and is a feature you should be looking out for when choosing your bike. Gyro bars offer the ability to perform bar-spins, the handle bars rotate without getting tangled whilst still allowing the brakes to work.

You'll find most BMX bikes have 36 spokes in their 20 inch wheels – these add rigidity to the bike. Now if you're going to be putting your BMX bike through its paces, try to make sure the bike you choose has strong rims. Double alloys tend to work the best.

When you’re looking to pull off those big tricks, a 25:9 gear ratio is recommended for ramp effective clearance.
