USS MIDWAY MUSEUM, San Diego, CA: The Midway American Patriot Award honors extraordinary individuals who exemplify the finest of American ideals, recognizing individual acts as well as cumulative lifetime achievement.

The USS Midway Museum was honored, on Thursday, August 31, 2018, to present the 12th annual Midway American Patriot Award to former three-term Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords, and her husband, former astronaut, and Midway Veteran, Mark Kelly, for their incredible service to country and community.

A Fulbright Scholar, Ms. Giffords was a three-term Congresswoman from Arizona and was particularly active in veterans, elected-official ethics and immigration issues. While serving in Congress, she suffered a serious gunshot wound in a 2011 attack and her recovery became an enduring national symbol of courage, resiliency, and devotion to freedom. In her honor, the USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10) was commissioned in 2017. Gabrielle is the first living woman to have a Navy ship named in her honor since Martha Washington in 1776.

Gabrielle’s husband, Mark, is a former naval aviator who flew 39 combat missions off the USS Midway during Operation Desert Storm. He later was assigned to NASA, ultimately spending 54 days in space as the pilot for two space shuttle missions– including the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour. Captain Kelly retired from NASA in 2011 with a NASA Exceptional Service Medal and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. Currently, Mark is a co-founder of World View Enterprises, a Tucson-based aerospace company with approximately 100 employees.
