There's an almost continuous history of lead minding on the Mendip Hills from the late Bronze Age until the late 19th century. In this video I check out the Roman epicentre of lead mining at Charterhouse (Blackmoor / Ubley Warren) and the Smitham Hill Chimney, a relic of the Victorian fad for reprocessing ancient waste heaps (the eponymous slag and slimes).
