i24NEWS DESK | US Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said in Tuesday's debate that he would 'take into consideration' the move of the US Embassy from Jerusalem back to Tel Aviv, if he is elected president.
Sanders was asked by Moderator Major Garrett to respond to 'American Jews who worry he is not supportive enough of Israel,' and if he would move the embassy back to Tel Aviv.
The Vermont senator responded, “I am very proud of being Jewish. I actually lived in Israel for some months, but what I happen to believe is that right now, sadly, tragically, in Israel, through Bibi Netanyahu, you have a reactionary racist who is now running that country,” he said, referring to Israel's prime minister.
He continued by saying, “Our foreign policy in the Mideast should be about absolutely protecting the independence and security of Israel, but you cannot ignore the suffering of the Palestinian people. We have got to have a policy that reaches out to the Palestinians and the Americans. That will come within the context of bringing nations together in the Mideast."
Sanders called for a two-state solution, and said he would consider moving the US Embassy back to Tel Aviv.
Rival Mike Bloomberg responded to the question raised about the embassy saying, “You can’t move the embassy back to Tel Aviv. We should not have done it without getting something from the Israeli government, but it was done and you’re going to have to leave it there.”
He continued to say, "The only solution here is a two-state solution, the Palestinians have to be accommodated. The real problem here is you have two groups of people, both of whom think God gave them the same piece of land and the answer is to obviously split it up."
Senator Elizabeth Warren said "Israelis have a right to security, and Palestinians have a right to dignity and auto determination. We need a two-state solution, that means bringing the parties back to the negotiating table. Trump is just going with one side."
Regarding the move of the embassy back to Tel Aviv, she added, "It's not our decision" and that the parties should make that decision.
