The internet is filled with posts about how putting X plant in your yard will keep mosquitoes and other insects away. This isn't quite true. The compounds that affect the insects are trapped inside the cells of the plants where they won't have any effect. You need to crush and mangle the plant, breaking its cell walls, to release the chemicals for them to work.
My personal favorite mosquito-repelling plant is American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) as it has three molecules that have been proven as effective as DEET in repelling biting insects. This bush grows all across the southeastern USA and is available in many nurseries.
