As reported by WisPolitics.com, Governor Tony Evers (D-Wisconsin) made comments at a flag raising ceremony outside the Capitol in honor of Pride Month. The progress pride flag, raised for the first time in state history, includes a chevron pattern to represent LGBTQ people of color, the transgender community and those who are living with or were lost to HIV/AIDS. Evers ordered the rainbow pride flag to fly over the Capitol for the first time in state history in 2019. It flew again in each of the last two years. Evers did not reference any GOP legislators specifically in his remarks, but suggested Republicans are preparing to ban books in the coming legislative session. A Wisconsin Examiner report this week showed Rep. Jesse James (R-Altoona) had started compiling a list of books brought to his attention by concerned constituents, including books about LGBTQ topics. James told WisPolitics.com his intent was to gather information about what books are available in schools and look at definitions of "inappropriate material" under state statutes. James added that not every book should be available to every grade and cited concerns about young children accessing books that address sexual topics or include "explicit illustrations and descriptions."
