How to disconnect a Car Battery Safely plus TOP TIP for keeping battery terminals corrosion free. If you are wondering which battery terminal to disconnect first then this video will explain how to disconnect a vehicle battery safely. It is very important to disconnect the Car Battery terminals in the correct order and safely so that you don't get a spark and blow any fuses or onboard computer circuits. It is also important so that you don't accidentally electrocute yourself.
All you need for this procedure is a Rag and a Socket wrench and the correct socket size for your Battery. Make sure when undoing the Battery terminal nuts that you do not touch your metal socket ratchet\wrench on any part of the chassis.
You should disconnect the Car Battery if you are installing or working on electrical items in your vehicle. You should also ideally disconnect your vehicle Battery if you are leaving your vehicle for a long period and it is not being used.
Some vehicles recommend the use of a 'Memory Saver' to avoid losing any computer settings. Always refer to your Owner Service Manual for necessary security codes.
After disconnecting your vehicle Battery you can then work on your vehicle, store the vehicle or remove \ replace the Battery.
It's a good idea to put a protective paste over the battery terminals (this is what I have on my terminals), if you haven't got any you can use a dollop of Petroleum Jelly as this stops corrosion.
If the terminals are corroded then give them a good clean whilst they are disconnected from the Battery and also if the battery terminals are corroded give these a clean whilst it's disconnected from the cables.
If you are unsure please get a competent mechanic to perform this.
