Research seminar with Palle Dahlstedt, Professor in Interaction Design at Gothenburg University.
In this lecture, Palle Dahlstedt will share a pragmatic, critical, and visionary view of what machine learning and artificial intelligence brings to the table for art. Pragmatic in the sense of analyzing what can actually be done today by artists working with big generative AI, and what may be missing in terms of creative agency. How does AI relate to other technologies and tools in the context of art? Yet critical about the popular expectations of AI, its ascribed ability and agency, and how AI is written and talked about today. What is really the role of humans, as agents, designers, programmers, users, tweakers, in current AI applications? Still visionary about the long term future of AI in art. How is it possible to find a personal expression with terabyte tools, when the personal contribution is a short prompt? Will we ever see autonomous AI artists? If so, why would they even care to make art for humans?
In the seminar Palle mentioned a performance lecture where he plays the piano with five different algorithms. If you are interested in what that sounded like - you can find the recording here:
