(6 May 2014) The Vatican released comprehensive statistics for the first time on Tuesday on how it has disciplined priests accused of raping and molesting children.
The Vatican said 848 priests had been defrocked and another 2,572 given lesser sanctions over the past decade.
The Vatican's UN ambassador in Geneva, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, revealed the figures during a second day of grilling by a UN committee monitoring implementation of the UN treaty against torture.
Tomasi released statistics about how the Holy See has adjudicated sex abuse cases globally,
However, Barbara Blaine, President of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, said church officials were still "minimising and denying the number of predator priests".
Megan Peterson, an abuse victim present on Tuesday, said her case - against a priest called Father J Paul - was brought up by a committee member at the meeting.
Paterson believes that Father J Paul was not appropriately punished, as he was subsequently put in charge of schools and orphanages in India.
