Easy step by step instructions on which taro roots to buy from the grocery store to grow into beautiful green Colocasia Esculenta plants in only a couple of months. I buy many taro roots go grow into Colocasia Esculenta plants. At the grocery store I look for hard and firm taro. The soft taro roots are rotting, so don't buy those. I also look for the taro roots with sprouts growing. You can also buy the ones without sprouts and they will still grow.

Many stores have small and large sized taro roots. The large ones usually weigh a few pounds and have a end cut off. Don't buy the the large ones! I have never had success growing them. Buy the small taro roots where you can buy several that will only weight about one pound total.

To start the taro to root and sprout, I put them in a shallow tray of water and leave them outdoors in the sun during the spring. After a month or two, they should start growing roots and leaves. At this point, they are ready to be planted in soil. I dig a shallow hole, and cover them with soil and water them thoroughly. During the summer they should grow nicely. I water mine twice a week and fertilize them once a week.

I leave the taro outdoors during the winter months. The leaves will deteriorate and the plant may die back to the ground. But when spring comes around the plant will regrow and become a beautiful plant again in the summer.
