It got cold in Slovakia today. Temperatures dropped to freezing point, which gave ski resort operators the opportunity to make artificial snow. The cooling brought the first snow to the Tatras, both technical (man-made) and natural. But only very locally, in the area of Tatranská Lomnica.
SHOTLIST
- SOUNDBITE (Slovak) Marian Glajda,, spokesperson for the ski resort operator TMR (Partially overlaid with shots): "Thanks to the fact that the weather created ideal conditions for snowmaking to start. So the D-day came and in the ski resort Tatranská Lomnica as well as in Jasná we started the technical snowmaking today. In Tatranská Lomnica we currently have forty snowmaking points in operation."
- Q Reporter: "Perinbaba is helping for the first time today. It is snowing lightly, so is there some natural snow, or is this not much help?"
- SOUNDBITE (Slovak) Glajda, (Partially overlaid with shots): "Well it's such a double-edged weapon, because when it snows it means that those temperatures are maybe a little bit higher somewhere and that in turn doesn't favour the technical snowmaking. For technical snowmaking to be able to go full blast, the ideal temperature is somewhere around, maybe minus 10 degrees. Even at minus four we can make snow as we see today in Tatranská Lomnica. And the first centimetres of snow are coming, which can be used by children for their first snowmen."
