Have you ever thought about the power and potential of tree seed?
Trees have existed for millennia and have lived through a wide variety of conditions and on varying sites. They inherit and retain traits that improve their ability to survive and reproduce- genetic adaptation and pass that onto their progeny (children). In order for us to create healthy forests for the future through artificial regeneration, we must understand why a tree grows well on certain sites, where we should be sourcing seed from, what affects tree seed production, how seed is collected handled and stored and then finally used and monitored. Understanding basic forest genetic principles is important for all practitioners that manage and have influence on our urban and rural forests.
Tree seeds cannot be purchased from a garden centre, and they are most certainly not waiting on a shelf for us to buy them- especially high-quality tree seeds of known origin. Before undertaking any tree planting or restoration activity, it is important to think about the seed you need, where to obtain it and whether it is best suited to your current and future climate.
Trained tree seed collectors are key for successful restoration programs in Ontario. There is a lot of information that a seed collector needs to know to capture that important genetic material for planting programs.

About Forests Ontario
Forests Ontario is dedicated to making Ontario’s forests greener. Our ambitious tree planting initiatives, extensive education programs and decades of community outreach have resulted in millions of trees being planted each year. Through our extensive partnerships and our diverse planting programs, we are working each day to increase forest cover, restore forests impacted by natural occurrences and improve forest conditions in Ontario and across Canada. About Envirothon
The Ontario Envirothon isn’t just an educational program—it’s a team-based competition for high school students who love the outdoors. Think of it as an incubator for the environmental leaders of tomorrow, designed to prepare students for future green careers. Since 1994, thousands of students, teachers and volunteers have participated in our annual Envirothon competitions, putting knowledge they’ve learned in the field to the test. Interactive workshops give students hands-on experience with forests, soils, wildlife, and aquatic ecosystems, while team-based activities are designed to develop critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, leadership and communication skills.
