If you are being treated in a hospital you may be confused by the wide variety of different titles that are used for physicians. This quick guide should help clarify the roles and education levels of the different physicians you may see during a hospitalization.

In the United States the terms physician and medical doctor are used interchangeably. They most commonly will have MD or DO degrees. Though a DPM (podiatrist) and MBBS or MB BCh (International degrees) are also considered physicians.
It is important to remember that every job in the hospital is just as important as the next, doctors cannot implement a plan without the help of nurses, nurses do not have time to perform the procedures they do without technical staff. And no one can do anything in a dirty environment which makes the maintenance and custodial staff critically important.
