Here is a little video about how to do the Chinese Ladder Braid -- also called the Chinese Staircase braid or DNA braid. It is a "braid" made from a series of knots. So if you can tie your shoes, you got this! A couple tips: the wetter the hair, the better (to keep all those flyaways at bay); "cinch up" the knots as you work your way down; and add small sections of hair for best results.
