In this video, Derek Lambert of MythVision Podcast addresses the controversy surrounding Michael Jones from Inspiring Philosophy, who recently gaslit Derek in his stream with Erik Manning over claims about Dionysus turning water into wine before the 3rd century AD. Jones not only misrepresents the dates of the sources he references, but his own source doesn’t even say what he claimed it does according to his own logic!
Joining Derek is Neal Sendlak from Gnostic Informant, who brings his sharp insights to dismantle many of Michael Jones’ arguments. Together, they tackle not just the Dionysus debate but also a range of other topics, including claims about dying-and-rising gods and key elements of comparative mythology that Jones either misunderstood or misrepresented.
Inspiring Philosophy is demonstrably incorrect. He arrogantly claimed that Dionysus first turns water into wine in a 3rd-century AD source. However, the source he refers to is actually from the early 2nd century AD. By his own logic, this account—which he concedes describes Dionysus turning water into wine—actually "doesn’t explicitly say" what he explicitly claimed it clearly states.
Even beyond this, earlier sources provided by MythVision—such as Pliny the Elder, Plutarch, Seneca, Aristotle, and Theopompus—strongly support the water-into-wine motif for Dionysus long before the 2nd century AD. I even reached out to Dionysian expert and classicist Ana Isabel Jiménez San Cristóbal, who personally confirmed my position. Simply put, he’s wrong.
He’s also wrong about Inanna’s death for three days and nights in The Descent of Inanna. He’s wrong about Baal’s death and resurrection. He’s wrong about Osiris and Horus in relation to resurrection themes. Over and over, Inspiring Philosophy makes flawed claims, and this is why MythVision works to provide people with the facts.
Unfortunately, many will never look beyond what Michael Jones or other apologists say. MythVision exists to challenge that narrative with evidence and expertise.
