Salmon aren’t the only ones who benefit from clean freshwater ecosystems! Every spring, thousands of Pacific Treefrogs make their way down to these vernal pools, bogs and swamps to mate, and you’ll often hear them in the evenings singing in this pleasantly rambunctious chorus.

These seasonal pools are ideal nesting grounds for these Frogs, as the fluctuating waters means there are no resident fish here, so females can lay up to 1200 eggs on submerged vegetation without fear of them getting eaten up by predators. Eventually these pools with drain into Salmon bearing creeks or dry up through the summer, just in time for those tadpoles to have developed into frogs that will then make their way out into the forest.

Habitat loss from development and toxic contaminants are some of the biggest threats to these ecosystems, so raingardens like this one that we’ve constructed here are really important in creating not only that seasonal freshwater habitat that these frogs require to reproduce, but in filtering out those contaminants for healthy freshwater habitat downstream. In doing so, they help to preserve the health of the surrounding forest, from the diversity of plants and trees that filter water to all the mosses that help retain moisture levels for amphibians to survive the driest months. It also makes for a great place for a nature walk, with a pretty lovely soundtrack on those evening strolls out here!
