The Christmas story is filled with signs—prophecies, angels, and stars—pointing toward the Savior. Right in the middle of one of this story’s most awe-inspiring scenes, as the skies over Bethlehem are split open by the blinding sight of angels, another sign is given.
But this one is different.
The angel seems to whisper to the shepherds... This will be a sign for you: You will find a baby, wrapped in swaddling cloths, and lying in a manger.
All the other signs spoke of a Savior who had come to us. This sign tells us that we can come to the Savior. This sign says, “Come close. Gather round. Find here a Savior who looks like you, who is wrapped up in the beauty and struggle of a life like yours, and who chose to be born in the midst of this messy world.”
As we peer more closely at the nativity scene through the eyes of one of the shepherds we find that this sign extends a welcome to all of us.
This baby, wrapped in cloth, and placed in a manger truly is a sign for you.
