In this video, Dr. Carley Akehurst, a naturopathic doctor and women's & children's health microbiome consultant, discusses the following:
● In collaboration with the Live UTI Free team, Dr. Akehurst has developed a form in which patients can set out their relevant medical history to take to consultations. It is a way for both the patient and the clinician to work more effectively together.
● Dr. Akehurst saw the need because many patients report that, when they describe their chronic or recurrent UTI symptoms, they are not being believed by clinicians. This outcome is exacerbated by how intimidating for patients the situation can be.
● Another factor at play is that the notion of chronic or recurrent UTI may be something the clinician has never heard of before. This, coupled with extreme time constraints on the clinician, can lead to misunderstandings and, ultimately, an unsatisfactory outcome for the patient.
● The goal is for patients to arrive at their appointments prepared and clearly and concisely communicate their symptoms and history in order for the clinician to understand the situation and provide assistance.
● From a patient perspective, they can gauge whether the clinician is open to listening, learning and assisting, or whether it will be best to find an alternative clinician who is.
● Completing your medical history—which includes listing symptoms as well as medications, procedures, supplements or protocols that have been used so far—may, understandably, elicit an emotional response. By completing this form prior to your consultation, it offers patients the opportunity to experience those emotions in the privacy of their own home, perhaps with the support of someone trusted.
● Once the form has been completed, it also alleviates the need to repeat the same traumatic experience, over and over, to different clinicians.
