Dr. Nikos Xanthoulis discuss with UK artist Akala, as part of a documentary for BBC FOUR, while performing Homer's Odyssey on his LUTHIEROS Phorminx. Dr. Nikos Xanthoulis sings part of the actual lyrics from the Odyssey while accompanying himself with the ancient musical instrument.
The PHORMINX is one of the oldest ancient Greek string instruments and the forerunner of the more elaborated ancient Kithara, as it was the first ancient instrument in which the Greeks introduced a spring mechanism for producing portamento, vibrato and tremolo!
LUTHIEROS Phorminx has 7 or 9 strings, and it is a very light musical instrument, making it the obvious choice for anyone (academic, musician, storyteller, et cetera) willing to exhibit how advanced the ancient instruments were and cause awe to their audience. With the use of harmonics and other advanced playing techniques, a 7-strings or 9-strings phorminx can produce three to four full octaves, including sharps and flats!
