How can we better support "invisible children" with neurodevelopmental disorders, not only in Brazil but around the world?
An estimated 250 million children worldwide have a neurodevelopmental delay or disability, and this number is believed to be increasing, particularly for children with autism or ADHD. The burden of neurological disorders is dangerously underestimated in low- and middle- income countries - mostly due to high levels of childhood sickness, stigma and limited diagnostic capacity.
This policy report follows a workshop in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2017 on neurodevelopmental disorders in children in Brazil, co-hosted by the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Brazilian National Academy of Medicine and the Academia Brasileira de Ciências.
