Synthetic photosynthesis has been achieved by combining nanowires and bacteria. The nanowires absorb the sunlight and then give off electrons which is then processed by two sets of bacteria to produce a chemical product that can be used in making fuel or plastics, or even medical drug precursors.
The process is only three percent efficient at this point in time, but researchers hope to be able to make it up to ten percent efficient.
