Colin Powell has been named as Secretary of State in the George W Bush's future administration.
The President-elect made the announcement at a school in Crawford, Texas.
Colin Powell had been at Bush's side at major campaign events throughout the Bush-Cheney march to the White House.
Powell will become the first black secretary of state in the US.
Under Bush's father, Powell served as the first black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff - America's highest ranking soldier.
The respected former Gulf War leader is Mr Bush's first appointment.
