Pistia a sole genus of aquatic plants from the Araceae family.
The single species Pistia stratiotes, is often called water cabbage, water lettuce, Nile cabbage, or shellflower.
it was first discovered from the Nile near Lake Victoria in Africa.
It is now present in nearly all tropical and subtropical fresh waterways and is considered as an invasive species.
Found in ponds, lakes, ditches, slow-moving or still water.
Water lettuce is among the world's most productive freshwater aquatic plants and is considered an invasive species.
The soft leaves will form a rosette with dense, submerged roots.Leaves may measure upto 25 cm in length.
The short white hairs in the surface of the leaves as well as the spongy parenchyma with large intercellular spaces in the leaves can trap air bubbles and increase the plant floating ability.
The flowers are dioecious, lack petals, and are hidden in the middle of the plant amongst the leaves.
The plant undergoes asexual reproduction by propagating through stolon's, yet evidence of sexual reproduction has also been observed
