🔥The Arroyo Beatus, made around 1220, was probably commissioned by King Ferdinand III of Castille.👉 [ Ссылка ] It is believed to have been illuminated at the San Pedro de Cardeña monastery by the same artists as the Cardeña Beatus.
Ferdinand III gave it to the nuns at San Andrés de Arroyo, making it one of the only two beatus manuscripts to be kept in a monastery of nuns, where it remained until the confiscation of 1836 and its subsequent sale to the Bibliothèque nationale de France in 1882.

The Arroyo Beatus contains Beatus of Liébana’s commentaries on the Apocalypse, and Saint Jerome’s commentaries on the Book of Daniel.
Bound in beige leather, this manuscript was written in primitive Gothic script between 1210 and 1220. It has 334 large pages and 69 Romanesque style illustrations illuminated with gold and silver.

The images feature designs typical of the Romanesque period and occasional reminiscences of imagery from early medieval beatus manuscripts. The Arroyo Beatus has certain peculiarities that make it stand out from all other beatus manuscripts.
This is one of the last large codices illustrated with many miniatures.
Some illustrations incorporate foreign iconographic details into early medieval Spanish illustrations. In short, it is the most European of all beatus codices.
Gold and silver were used profusely. Lapis lazuli imported from Persia was used for the very deepest blues, giving the manuscript a lavish touch, comparable only to that of gold leaf. All this makes it the most splendid late beatus codex.
