BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- Groups supporting the expansion of Medicaid in North Carolina say a new study shows local counties are losing economic benefits because of the state's opposition.
The study by George Washington University estimates Buncombe County will lose $745 million in business activity over the next five years.
The study was sponsored by the Cone Health Foundation and the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. Buncombe County commissioner Brownie Newman says this study is great way to see impact of the expansion.
"We knew it was having a big impact but I think the study is really interesting in terms of quantifying how big that impact really is," Newman said.
Republican lawmakers who oppose the expansion say the study is flawed because it doesn't account for lost revenues by shifting more private insurance patients to medicaid, which reimburses doctors and hospitals at lower rates.
