Karavaka light house or Sacramento light house in katrenikona, east godavari
Kandi kuppa is a one of the most beautiful places in godavari coastal area. This place has a historic light house.
SACRAMENTO LIGHTHOUSE, Near Pora (Fishermen Village) , Via. Bojjavaripeta and Kandikuppa, East Godavi District, A.P, India.
SACRAMENTO LIGHTHOUSE:
The Lighthouse was constructed during 1893-95 at a safe distance from the sea, in order to indicate the sand shoal situated at the confluence of Godavari River with the Bay of Bengal.
The Lighthouse was named after the name of the ship “SACRAMENTO” which grounded on the nearby shoal in 1868. The station is remotely located and is approachable by road from Rajahmundry or Kakinada which are the nearest railheads. There is a motorable road upto the lighthouse area. The journey is interesting as one comes across lush paddy fields, Prawn and fish culture tanks, Mangrove forests and casuarinas farms en-route.
The Lighthouse is cylindrical and not tapering towards the top. The exterior of the tower has not been painted. The top dome is painted a beautiful red which is clearly visible on Google / Wikimapia maps. The inner wall has been raised to form the murette of lantern house. The outer wall has been projected out to provide the passage around the lantern house for cleaning the glazing and the dome. A wick lamp was commissioned into service at the Lighthouse towards the end of 1895. Subsequently the P.V. lighting equipment with 3rd order (large) optic was obtained from M/s. Chance Bros and Company Limited, Lighthouse Engineers and Constructors, Birmingham and was installed on the lighthouse during 1901-02.
The P.V. system worked faithfully for 95 years. When the mains supply was extended to the station, the P.V. system was given a farewell and a new electrical Metal Halide 230V 400W lamp became operational on 25th August 1997. In 2004 a cluster system of lamps with three 150 W 230 V Metal Halide Lamps were installed together with integration of direct of optic by stepper motor.
Previously the revolution of the lens assembly is achieved by a counter-weight system. Presently the electric motor is doing the job, running the same old faithful mechanism which is working non-stop for more than the last hundred years. Looking at it you will feel that it can easily clock another hundred years. This speaks volumes about the beauty of its engineering and maintenance.
Public are allowed to visit the place and climb onto the tower via the internal staircase consisting of about 250 comfortable steps. The many glass windows en-route give you an interesting view of the scenery on the outside at many levels as you go up. The windows themselves are interesting in that they are the same old ones and have interesting door catches and latches and with bee-hives on the outside. A rare sight indeed – to look at a beehive close up, from the comfort and safety of the interior of the lighthouse. The ancient machinery at the top is wonderful to look at. The prism lens is a real stunner. The view from the top is absolutely captivating. Confluence of River Godavari, the sand shoals with the sea waves beating over them and the many offshore oil drilling platforms of the Krishna-Godavari basin of oil fields are very interesting. The countryside to the west is really wonderful with the many hues of mangrove forests, paddy fields, and prawn culture tanks. The lighthouse staff are very cordial and the old helper, one Mr Suryarao is a mine of information on the lighthouse and its surroundings.
All in all the lighthouse is a must not only to anybody who is interested in lighthouses but also nature lovers and historians.
