Do something with dowels. That was the challenge we threw down for our designers and did they pick-up on it with results ranging from full-on furniture to this cool coat rack you can make in an afternoon.
The raw materials for this coat rack? Just a board, a dowel, and some paint. Start by cutting down the dowel. The easiest way to make the 4-inch pieces you need is to use a miter box to cut over-sized sections, say 6 inches or so with a 45-degree angled cut at each end of the sections. Then, on your miter box, measure 4 inches from the straight-cut mark, and clamp a piece of scrap wood there to act as a stop. Slide your dowel piece in and make the straight cut. 4-inches every time. Sand the ends, and either leave them natural, or give them a little pop of color with some paint.
With the board cut to size and sanded smooth, lay out the 5 points that will become the slots for the dowels to rest in. That's the real key to this project -- making those slots and the key to making them is a hole bit. Before drilling, use a screw or nail to make a little indentation so the bit doesn't 'jump' or travel, then center the bit and drill the circle from the board.
Next, using a small square, draw two lines from the outer perimeter of each circle, all the way to the top edge of the board. Use a jigsaw to carefully cut along each line and there's the slot! Sand each slot smooth, then use wood glue in the curvature and clamp each dowel into place. Let each dowel dry for at least 30-minutes before you un-clamp. Then make sure you let the glue cure for at least 24 hours before you hang the rack.
