Mount Islip (pronounced "eye-slip") stands at 8,250 ft in isolation at the west end of the middle high country. The view from the summit gives a rewarding panorama over the heart of the San Gabriels. It was named after George Islip, an early mountain pioneer who homesteaded in the San Gabriel Canyon in the 1880s. A lookout tower was built on top pf Mt Islip in 1927 and was moved to South Mount Hawkins a decade later. Today, the dilapidated old stone cabin, just below the summit, remains as a lone reminder of those days when searching eye guarded the high country.
